According to Matt Cutts, there are over 100 factors that affect search engine ranking. For those of you who don't know, Matt is a Google guy guru, he is employed by Google but writes an independent blog and shares information related to Google and search engine optimization. Unfortunately, of those 100 items that account for search engine ranking, there are only a few that webmasters can actually control.

Unless you are a interested in an exercise of futility, it is important to only focus on those ranking factors that you, as a webmaster, can control and influence.

What are Search Engine factors do webmasters control?

Outside of the obvious (webpage title and description) those items which the webmaster has the most control are: PageRank, TrustRank, Anchor Text, Keyword Density, Domain Age, URL, and Relevant Links.

How can a webmaster use these items to help ranking?

First off--the obvious, each and every web page should have a descriptive page specific title and description. The title, description, and header tags are channels to communicate the most important details of a specific webpage. They should be used effectively, but not be abused. The web page should make use of h1 and h2 tags (header tags) to emphasize pertinent keywords and phrases.

Particular attention should be paid when formatting urls. Keywords related to the webpage can and should be used in the webpage urls. Use hyphens rather than underscores between the keywords. Search engines are designed by developers and programming languages will recognize a hyphen and distinguish separate words, while an underscore blends the words. What kinds of content generally attract quality links?

The idea is develop quality content that will result in incoming links. Think of JibJab, http://www.jibjab.com they portrayed a controversial subject in a humorous way without alienating their audience. While JibJab was able to garner a lot of attention, its a tricky tight-rope to walk. Additionally, bloggers notoriously skim social bookmarking sites for content to write about which will result in additional links. Keep in mind that in order to bookmark a webpage, it really must have genuine value.

Before we talk more about links, there are a few warnings worth mentioning.

What are the link warnings?

The first is to attain links gradually, search engines prefer links obtained over time rather than links achieved all at once. Avoid link schemes, link farms, or overt reciprocal links, they can be time consuming and have very little benefit. Avoid links on the C block. If you own multiple domains, be sure not to triangulate links. Search engines have become wise to this and they prefer a linking scheme that is more like a star (or web).

What keywords should you optimize for?

When determining what keywords to optimize a website for, there are a number of tools that will assess the number of times that a keyword or phrase is searched on, the number of websites/webpages competing for that keyword or phrase, and rate the phrase. Obviously, the terms that have more searches and less competition are the best to optimize for--if, and only if, they relate to your product or service. If you optimize for terms that are either too broad, you will likely increase traffic but decrease your conversions. It is really a balancing act. Two of the more popular tools available are Keyword Discovery and Word Tracker. Also, talk to friends or family members and ask what phrases they would use to describe your product or service. You might be surprised with the terms they use. Consider optimizing for regional variations, look at the variety of terms used to describe soda - tonic, pop, soda, soda pop, or cola all are relevant and popular but only within a specific region. Examine web logs to determine what your users are using, look at the language used in emails and forum posts and consider optimizing specific pages for popular descriptive terms.

And finally, use competitive intelligence to locate links and keywords. What are your competitors using? Analyze the adwords they bid on, look at their meta tags, look at their anchor links.

There is a wealth of information out there, no real mystery to it, so use it to your advantage.

To rank high on Google, your website has to be measured by “500 million variables and 2 billion terms” of Google’s equation, as stated on Google’s Corporate Information Technology Overview page. Google’s ranking system is based on a democracy, and the citizens are the links on the worldwide web that vote for each other. Not unlike our government today, many of these “links” are paid for, and some are of greater value. Ranking high on Google is playing politics. Links and Keywords are the key players in the ranking game. Google also takes into consideration the full content of the page including HTML codes, fonts, subdivisions and the “precise location of each word.”

Links are votes. You must develop a link strategy. Google likes linking things together. Create a rich network of links with distinct quality content. Your website must have quality links going out and coming in. Quality is the key word. Links from reputable pages (which ironically includes .gov pages) are given more weight than links on “link farm” pages. Linking to a “link farm” is one of the worst things you can do and can potentially get your deported off the web. The better the links, the better your ranking. Google will factor in your page content and the content of the pages you link to. Do your research. Google has a free page rank tool on their toolbar. Use it to find out the page ranking and visit the site.

Google also gives more weight to one-way links that lead to your site, and less weight to reciprocal links. How do you get these? Buy them. List yourself in a reputable directory listing. Make sure you are listed in the Open Directory Project (DMOZ.org). If you can’t buy links, write good content. Give someone a reason to link to your site. Again, the keyword is Quality. Submitting articles and press releases are also strategies in the linking game.

Keywords are your platform. They are what you stand for. Words count. Graphics don’t. Make sure your words are not in graphic form and make sure you have relevant titles under your graphics. Start with your title tag. Put everything you stand for in ten words or less. Make your URLs short and keyword specific. Brand yourself. If you type in soda, Mountain Dew will not show up on the first page. If you type in Mountain Dew, it will be on the first page. Brand yourself so users know what they are searching for. Do not put the same words in every heading and every tag. Be descriptive. Sell yourself. There are multitudes of free keyword rank and suggestion tools. Use them as a supplement to your knowledge of your company.

Think of every element in your website as words and pages in a presentation that is going to be up for a vote. Does everything fit? Is it all related? Are you a reputable company with a quality product? Does it sell? Now sell it. Google is waiting for you.

Again you will see that your host provider can often provide you stats on your site but what if you have 1 hosted site and a couple of blogs? A good way to provide content to visitors to your site is to creat your own video content. You can show how programs work, explain your theories, review programs and generally do almost anything. There are a number of products out there for capturing your screen contents and some of them do cost a lot of money but Auto Screen Recorder 2.0 is Free.

With this recorder you can record the whole of your screen, just one window or a custom part of your screen. The free version doesn't include sound recording but once you have finished recording your session you can use Windows Movie Maker to edit the file and then record a commentary or add a music file on top.

The software is really easy to use (must be..if I can use it!!) and an upgrade to 2.1 costs just $49.95 (approx £27).

Getting your files onto your server

If you do not have an integrated File Transfer program in your web editor then you will need to consider how you will get your files from your PC onto the domain you have set up with your host. Typically your host will provide a simple upload facility for up to say 20 files but it can be a drag having to identify each file seperately in each upload box. The answer is to get yourself a program which will easily get your files uploaded. The software that I use is from CORE and is a free program. Version 2.1 is available to download now and the process is as simple as loading music onto your mp3 player. You will basically see 2 folders side by side and you decide which files to transfer from one to the other. You see this software isn't just for uploading but can be used for downloading as well so it is always useful to have a backup directory on your server where you can store important files.

Of course you may decide that by using a blog tool you are trapped as to the level of sophistication that you can go to and then you would decide to design your own website. A lot of web site hosts such as Yahoo will give you access to an HTML editor online which can get you started but you can do better and there is editor software that can offer you either a WYSIWYG experience or you can edit in HTML. The evrsoft program bannered above also has a file transfer protocol (FTP) program which will allow you to automatically upload your files to your domain server without having to use an external FTP program.

The free version of this software is fully functional and will enable you to produce some excellent sites. Some parts of the program are disabled and will be available once upgraded but there is plenty of value here without the upgrade.

Another great way of building a community is to set up a forum. I have set up a couple of forums for free using http://www.freeforums.org/ and the forums are very easy to maintain and have loads of great features for your members. With this site there is also the ability to set up a linked blog that is hosted by Wordpress. You can also set up a bespoke toolbar for your forum which you can then fill with content of your choice. Some of this may be links to sites or a news section which scrolls across the toolbar. The content of this can be from either an RSS feed or you can input your own content. I found these very easy to use and is a great way to get messages to your members without resorting to emails which may or may not get read.

You can also set up the forum with a portal front end which you can put your own affiliate links and content on which is another great way of interacting with your forum members.

Your members also experience an enhanced posting experience and they can even post YouTube videos directly into the links.

All in all this is a great forum and I would definately recommend this to new webmasters starting out and with the amount of flexibility on offer I am sure that some more sophisticated webmasters could get a lot out the forum as well.

Getting a site hosted for free with no fees

As most of us will know running a website costs money. You have to pay for the domain registration, the site hosting, the web building software and you have to put a lot of time into maintaining the site. There is, however, another avenue for prospective webmasters and that is to set up you site as a blog. Blogs generally allow you to have an easy interface for you to add content to your site and you can add html code and sometimes Java code to the site so you can use affiliate codes etc so that you can literally start making money within minutes of setting up a site and the best part is that you can get your site hosted with its own relevant name for free!..and lets face it you can't get much better than that!

The next site that we are going to look at is SkillGround.

Now this is totally different to the casino and poker games that we looked at earlier. Skillground allows you to play golf, car racing and 3rd person shooters for free and then when you start getting better at the games you can challenge other players for money. To make things slightly fairer they do have a handicap system and I can speak from experience that the golf game is hugely addictive. On the golf there have been a number of freerolls in the past with the top players having the chance to win golf clubs, bags etc. As a skill game this kind of gambling should not be a problem for promotion to the USA. All in all I do like their product and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others as a possible way to market something different and to work a niche.
